Maharaja Ranjit Singh

This miniature portrait of Maharaja Ranjit Singh was painted on ivory. Such items were products that were sold to visiting tourists and were quite popular in the country’s capital city of Delhi, however in this particular case the piece could very well have been a commissioned work for a noble house. The brush-strokes on closer examination are quite primitive and not finely defined which implies that it is a lesser work, perhaps a practice effort even. Sikhism has deep roots in Bihar the tenth Sikh Guru – Guru Gobind Singh-ji – was born in Bihar, and one of the takhts of Sikhism exists in Patna at Patna Sahib. This gave rise to a thriving Sikh community, one of the five streams of religious philosophy that form a confluence in the state of Bihar.
