Padmapani Avalokiteshwara
A rare red sandstone sculpture from the 7th century, the four-armed Padamapani Avalokiteshvara is a manifestation of the compassionate Buddha. The sculpture brings to mind the famous mural painting of the Padmapani Avalokiteshvara within the interior of a rock-cut Buddhist monastery at Ajanta. It is believed that the Avalokiteshvara guards the world in the interval between the departure of the historical Buddha, and the appearance of the future Buddha, Maitreya. In fact, His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, is considered to be a reincarnation of the Avalokiteshvara.
