Bihar Museum Biennale presents “Patna: City of Museums” - an exhibition specially curated for the Biennale celebrating iconic and upcoming cultural institutions in Patna. Patna is preceded by centuries of history. Even as dynasties changed hands, communities settled in, and years flew by—Patna has remained at the cosmopolitan heart of Bihar. Perennially nurtured by Ganga, the city is home to museums enshrining the region’s magnificent past. Its first museum was established in 1917, during the British Raj. With the city’s growth and transformation, its people have sought museums to reflect on their past, scientific evolution, spiritual legacy, and contemporary history. This has made way for a cultural rejuvenation, with several museums now dotting the city’s landscape, exemplifying Patna as a‘City of Museums.’ After nearly a century, a momentous addition was made to the city’s cultural landscape — the Bihar Museum. Envisaged by the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Nitish Kumar, it was inaugurated in 2015. The museum is now a central custodian of Bihar’s history, bearing collections of antiquities, manuscripts, living traditions, and contemporary art from Bihar. A definitive catalyst, the museum, under the leadership of Shri Anjani Kumar Singh, has reshaped museum culture in the city and the country. No longer seen as sites memorialising the past, museums now serve as spaces where visitors can draw history into their present and the future. This exhibition has been conceived and designed by BRMA, under the guidance of Shri Anjani Kumar Singh, Director General, Bihar Museum, with special support by Building Construction Department, Government of Bihar.
